Hardwick Hall is a short walk away. It's an Elizabethan house, quite famous. You can spend a good day there. National Trust Hardwick Hall.
The cottage itself is a four-star place. It's been renovated, so it's comfortable and clean. There's a boot room for muddy boots, which you'll need. The living room looks out over the garden and the stream. The stairs are a typical cottage staircase, so they're a bit steep and turn a corner.
You're on the edge of the Peak District. Chatsworth is about a 25-minute drive. So is Bolsover Castle. Chesterfield with the crooked spire church is maybe 15 minutes away. For longer walks, you can drive into the Peaks proper in under half an hour. Peak District National Park.
