Whittle Dene Reservoir House

Whittle Dene Reservoir House is in Welton, Northumberland. It sits right on the edge of the reservoir, so all the windows look out over the water. It was built in 1848, originally for the water company manager. The building is Tudor style with an octagonal tower. It's a listed building.

It sleeps six people in three bedrooms. There's one bathroom downstairs with a bath and shower. The master bedroom has a king-size bed and a roll-top bath in the window, so you can look out at the view. That room also has its own toilet and a walk-in dressing area. The stairs are normal, not especially steep.

Downstairs, there's a kitchen with a range cooker, a dishwasher, and a Nespresso machine. The utility room has a washer and dryer. There's a dining room and a separate living room, both with reservoir views. The dining room has a wood burner in a big inglenook fireplace. There's also a small snug room with a TV and a PlayStation.

Outside, there's a gravel drive that fits three cars. The garden is enclosed and goes right down to the water's edge. It's got a patio with furniture, a barbecue, and a hot tub.

The reservoir itself is for coarse fishing, if that's your thing. It's a nature reserve, so there's birdlife. There's a bird hide and a picnic area just along the bank. For walking, you're close to sections of Hadrian's Wall. The Sycamore Gap and Vindolanda fort are about a 20-minute drive. English Heritage Hadrian's Wall has details.

Hexham is a 15-minute drive. It's a market town with an abbey, shops, and places to eat. Corbridge is similar, about 20 minutes away. Newcastle city centre is roughly 25 minutes by car if you want that.

The Northumberland coast, like Craster or Alnmouth, is about 40 minutes' drive. For golf, there are courses at Matfen, Slaley, and Close House, all within a 30-minute radius.

The property is rated 5 Star. It's a luxury let, so it's well-equipped. Bedding and towels are included. There's WiFi. We allow up to two dogs. There's a cot and a highchair available if you need them.

There's a local pub that does food about three quarters of a mile away. The nearest shop is in Stocksfield, about four and a half miles.

For more on the local area, Northumberland National Park and Northumberland County Council sites are useful.
