The Cabin
Ongar was an important market town in medieval times and there are still the remains of a Roman castle and is home to a famous brasserie frequented by the stars of film and television. Listed buildings line Chipping Ongar high street; in nearby Greensted village you can visit Greensted Church, which is believed to be the oldest wooden church in the world dating back to the sixth century. Take a ride on the Epping Ongar railway, steam and diesel hauled trains travel through 5 miles of picturesque rolling countryside and Epping Forest, along the former London Underground central line.
If you are interested in the military there is a secret nuclear bunker and a museum at the North Weald airfield which also holds a huge outdoor weekly market. Weald Country Park has another one of the world’s oldest wooden churches and is famous for its deer park. Weald boasts spectacular views and space, covering over 520 acres of woodland, wildflower meadows and open grassland ideal for walking or cycling. For anglers, there is a large lake to fish in.
If you a fancy seeing a show in London then there are regular trains from Epping, Brentwood and Shenfield railway stations and for a day at the coast a trip to Mersea will not disappoint. Mersea gets cut off for about an hour when there is a very high tide, usually once a month, so it’s worthwhile checking the tides, all adding to the uniqueness and charm. It is a beautiful island with lots of coastal and nature walks, seafood restaurants with the famous Mersea oysters, delis, take aways, supermarket and child friendly pubs with craft beer. Why not visit Mersea Island vineyard and brewery where a beer festival is held at Easter and you can buy real ale, wines and even Mersea Island gin? The Mersea Regatta, which has been running since 1838, is held every August and should not be missed. There is a variety of rowing races, an outboard motor balloon race, swimming race and ‘walking the Greasy Pole’ and ends in a firework display in the evening. If you are looking for a more traditional seaside town with amusements, rides and candyfloss then pop along to Southend-on-Sea or Great Yarmouth.
