Longa House is on the North Coast 500 route, near Gairloch. It’s a big, detached house right by the sea. Sleeps seventeen across eight bedrooms. That means four bathrooms, which you’ll need with a group that size. It has a 4 Star rating, so it’s comfortable and well-equipped.
The main thing is the view. There are big windows facing the loch. You can see the Torridon mountains, Skye, and on a clear day, the Outer Hebrides. The weather changes fast here. You can sit inside by the wood burner and watch it all roll past.
There’s a deck around the living area. Around the side is a sauna that fits six, with a sea view. The garden is lawn, good for kids to run about. A track from the garden gate leads down to the shore and Big Sand beach.
Inside, the layout works for a crowd. The back door brings you into a boot room with a washing machine, handy for wet coats and boots. Four bedrooms and two bathrooms are on the ground floor. The main space is open plan: kitchen, big dining table that seats sixteen, and a living room with those full-height windows. Upstairs are another four bedrooms and a mezzanine sitting area with more views.
The stairs are fine, but they are open-tread and quite steep in one section, so just watch that.
You’re in a crofting community. Sheep and cattle wander freely. You might see otters, sea eagles, or dolphins from the house. Boat trips for whale watching go from the local harbour.
For things to do, you’re well placed for the NC500. Driving south takes you through the Torridons and over the pass to Applecross. North goes to Ullapool and Assynt. The beach at Redpoint is about a twenty minute drive. Gairloch has a shop, a petrol station, and a few places to eat.
Facilities: everything you’d expect is there. Washing machine, dishwasher, bedding and towels included. There’s a cot and highchair. Parking for several cars. No pets, sorry.
