Ty Fferm Hen

Ty Fferm Hen is our place, an old farmhouse on our land in Talybont. It sleeps four but in one big room upstairs, with a double and two singles all together, plus the sofa bed downstairs. It's not the layout for everyone but it works well for a family.

The house is genuinely old, parts from the 1500s. The stairs are steep, like they are in these places. There's one bathroom, with a free-standing bath that has a shower attachment. It's fine, but it's not a powerful shower.

Downstairs is open-plan with a wood burner. We leave you some logs to start you off. Outside is an enclosed garden with a barbecue. You're on a 34-acre farm, so you can walk straight out onto the Usk Valley Trail. The views are good, right across to the Sugar Loaf and the Black Mountains.

Because we're in the Brecon Beacons National Park, it's an International Dark Sky Reserve. On a clear night, you can see the stars properly. No light pollution.

Talybont-on-Usk village is a five-minute drive. It's got a really good village shop and café, a few pubs that do food, and you can hire bikes there. You can cycle along the canal towpath into Brecon, which is about five miles.

If you want to drive out, Brecon has the usual town things, museums and cafes. Hay-on-Wye is about forty minutes for the bookshops. Abergavenny is maybe half an hour. There's horse riding locally and golf not far away.

Facilities: Washing machine, parking right outside, bedding and towels are included. All the electricity is covered. No pets, I'm afraid.

Useful links for planning: Brecon Beacons National Park and for the dark sky status, Brecon Beacons Dark Skies.
