Birkerthwaite Farmhouse is in Beckfoot. It's at the end of an unmade track, so the last bit is a bit rough. It's surrounded by moorland. It's very quiet up here.
The farmhouse itself dates from 1627. It's got thick stone walls, low beams, and flagged floors. Some of the beams are original, from local shipwrecks. There are unusual old cupboards built into the walls. You get the sense of its age.
It sleeps four. Two bedrooms, two bathrooms. It's got a 4 Star rating, which means it's comfortable and well kept. There's an open fire and an Aga cooker, which makes it very cosy. The stairs are steep, as you'd expect. There's a stairgate at the top.
The garden is enclosed, so it's fine for a dog. We allow one well-behaved pet.
It's good walking country straight from the door. The views from here are of Scafell and Eskdale. For a proper day out, you can drive over the Hardknott and Wrynose passes to Langdale or Ambleside. It's a stunning drive, but the passes are single track with sharp bends, so take it slow.
Wast Water is a short drive away. Muncaster Castle and the Hardknott Roman Fort are nearby. If you fancy the coast, there are sandy beaches to the west. The Ravenglass and Eskdale steam railway is worth a trip.
The nearest shop is about three miles away. The nearest pub is two and a half miles.
