Birkerthwaite Cottage

Birkerthwaite Cottage is in Beckfoot, Cumbria. It's part of an old farmstead from the 1600s. You'll need to drive down an unmade track to get there. It feels very quiet and remote, with moorland and farms all around. The views from here are good, you can see Scafell and down the Eskdale Valley.

The cottage sleeps five. There are three bedrooms and one bathroom. It's a 4 Star place, so it's comfortable and well presented. The living area is upstairs, with wooden floors. It opens out onto a balcony that looks over the gardens. Some of the beams in the building are from old shipwrecks off the coast.

There's parking on site. The garden is enclosed, which is handy if you're bringing a dog. We allow one well-behaved pet. There's a washing machine, WiFi, and a TV. Bedding is included. There's a stairgate fitted.

The location is really for walkers. It's fantastic country for it. You can drive to Wast Water, it's not far. For a day out, you can get the steam train from Ravenglass. Muncaster Castle is nearby, and so is Hardknott Roman Fort.

If you want to go to Ambleside or see the Langdale Pikes, you drive over the Hardknott and Wrynose passes. It's a stunning drive, but the roads are steep and narrow. Take it slow. The west coast has some sandy beaches about half an hour away.

The nearest shop is three miles, and the closest pub is about two and a half miles.
