This is Mains of Auchmedden Cottage. It's my place in Pennan, up on the north Aberdeenshire coast. It's a detached granite cottage, over a hundred years old, so you get the original thick walls and stone floors. It's got its own water supply from a spring in the rock, which is quite unusual. The plumbing is all modern, though.
It sleeps four in two double bedrooms. There's one bathroom with a shower. It's a 3 Star place, so it's comfortable and clean but not high-end. Everything works.
The living room and kitchen are open plan. There's a woodburning stove for cooler evenings. The garden is enclosed, with a patio and a BBQ. You get a good view of Pennan Bay from there. You might know the bay from the film Local Hero. It's a quiet spot, you just hear the sea and the birds.
Pennan itself is a single row of cottages along the shore. There's a pub there, about a mile's walk down the hill. It's a proper old-fashioned one. The beach is shingle. For a sandy beach, Aberdour is a short drive. The coastal path is right there for walking.
If you drive along the coast, you get to places like Crovie and Gardenstown. They're old fishing villages built into the cliffs. Dramatic scenery. For a day out, Macduff and Banff are about eleven miles away. Macduff has a good aquarium. Banff has Duff House, which is an art gallery run by National Galleries Scotland. There's also the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses in Fraserburgh, which is interesting.
For birdwatchers, the RSPB reserve at Troup Head is only four miles away. That's where the seabird colonies are, including gannets. If you play golf, there are several courses nearby, like Fraserburgh and Pennan.
Facilities: there's a washing machine, WiFi, TV, and parking for two cars on the gravel drive. Bedding and towels are included. We provide a cot and highchair if you need them. The entrance is step-free, so it's okay for wheelchair access to get inside. You can bring up to two dogs. There's storage for bikes.
