Gardener's Bothy

It's called the Gardener's Bothy. It's a one-bedroom cottage for two people, on the Balnaboth Estate in Glenprosen. The glen is quiet, just a single-track road. You get red squirrels in the trees and deer in the fields around you.

The bothy itself is small but it's got everything. One bedroom upstairs, a bathroom with a shower, and a living room with a wood-burning stove downstairs. It's got a 4 Star rating, so it's comfortable and well-kept. The stairs up to the bedroom are a typical cottage staircase, so they're a bit steep and narrow.

You're right on the edge of the Cairngorms National Park. The estate has its own walks straight from the door, through woods and along the river. You can fish on the River Prosen if that's your thing. The skiing at Glenshee is about a 40-minute drive.

For shops or a pub, you need to drive. Kirriemuir is the nearest proper town, about 20 minutes away. It's a nice market town. Dundee is under an hour's drive. If you go the other way, the Angus coast with places like Arbroath is maybe 40 minutes.

Facilities: there's parking right outside, a washing machine, and the wood burner. You can bring one well-behaved dog. A cot and highchair are there if you need them.

For planning, the National Trust for Scotland and the Visit Cairngorms sites are useful.
