You can get to Glasgow in under an hour. Ferries to Arran and the islands leave from Ardrossan and other ports nearby. For walking, the Ayrshire Coastal Path is on your doorstep. For something bigger, Galloway Forest Park is good for biking and dark skies.
Local visits: Culzean Castle is spectacular and worth a trip. Dumfries House is also nearby.
