Valhalla Brae

Valhalla Brae is in Keiss, up on the north coast. It's a bungalow, so everything's on one level apart from a couple of rooms upstairs. It sleeps seven. Three bedrooms, three bathrooms. Two of the bedrooms are en-suite, which helps with a full house.

It's got a 4 Star rating. The place is in good order, comfortable, but it's not a show home. It's got everything you'd need.

The main thing is the view. The living room is upstairs at the front, just a big room with a huge window looking straight out over Sinclair Bay and the old castle. You can sit there all day and watch the sea. The kitchen is downstairs and it's big enough for everyone to eat in.

Outside, there's a garden to the side, mainly grass, with a decked bit. You can have a coffee out there in the morning. It's very quiet.

The beach is about three miles long and it starts just down the hill. You can walk to the harbour and the old castle ruins from the house. We see seals often. If you're lucky, you might spot otters or even orcas from the shore, but that's rarer.

Dunnet Head is about a 15-minute drive. It's the most northerly point on the mainland and good for seeing puffins in season. The Castle of Mey is close by. Wick's about 8 miles for shops. You can get the ferry to Orkney from John o' Groats, which is half an hour away.

For facilities: it's got a washing machine, dishwasher, WiFi, TV. Bedding and towels are included. There's parking. We can take up to two dogs. There's a cot and a highchair if needed. The pub and restaurant in the village are about half a mile.

If you're planning trips, these sites are useful: National Trust for Scotland at Dunnet Head and North Coast 500.
