Old Reading Room

The Old Reading Room is in Thimbleby, just inside the edge of the North York Moors. It's a detached stone cottage. It was the village reading room a hundred years ago. You can still see the old beams and stonework.

It sleeps five, in three bedrooms. There are two bathrooms. It's a 5 Star place, so it's been done up to a high standard. The floors are a mix of stone and oak. There's a glass hallway that's quite bright and modern compared to the rest. The place is open plan downstairs.

You've got a woodburning stove for the evenings. There's a proper enclosed garden with a patio, so it's safe for kids or a dog. Parking is right there.

Inside, it's got the things you need: a washing machine, dishwasher, WiFi, and TV. Bedding and towels are included. We can provide a cot and a highchair.

The village is quiet. The nearest shop and a decent pub are about a mile away in Oswaldkirk. For walking, you step straight out onto the moors. The paths and bike trails around here are very good. Cod Beck Reservoir is nearby if you fancy that.

You can drive to Helmsley in about ten minutes. It's a nice little market town with a castle. York is under an hour's drive for a day out. Castle Howard and Fountains Abbey are both within about half an hour. If you want to explore the coast, Whitby is roughly 40 minutes away.
