Big Barns Cottage is near Golspie, up in the Highlands. It's part of an old, listed Arts and Crafts house. It was built for the Duke of Sutherland a long time ago. The architect George Devey converted it in the 1800s. It's got its own front door and feels separate.
It sleeps four. Two bedrooms upstairs, one with a double bed and one with twins. One bathroom. The stairs are fine but they're old cottage stairs, so a bit steep. The kitchen is small but it has everything you need.
The living room has a wood burner and the original stone floor. There's a separate dining room. The furniture fits the place, some of it is antique. It's comfortable but it's an old building.
You get your own bit of garden. It's surrounded by plants and has a table and chairs. The main garden around it is two acres, with woodland and rare plants. You'll probably see deer. From upstairs you can see the sea.
The local beach is about a 20 minute walk. You can often see seals from there. You're down a long estate track, about a mile from the main road, so it's very quiet.
Golspie and Brora are ten minutes away by car. They've got pubs, shops, cafes, and places to eat. The North Coast 500 route passes about a mile from here.
Dunrobin Castle is close. It's worth a visit, the gardens are something else. There's good walking and cycling right from the door. For a bigger day out, you can get to the Cairngorms in under an hour.
Practical stuff: it's a 4 Star rating. There's parking. Wi-Fi. Washing machine. Bedding and towels are included. We allow up to two dogs.
