Skipper's Retreat

Skipper's Retreat is on North Uist, just up from Clachan Sands. It's a modern bungalow, so it's all on one level. It’s detached and you've got the place to yourself.

It sleeps four, two bedrooms, one bathroom. The toilet and shower are wheelchair accessible. It's got a 5 Star rating, which means it's well-equipped and in good condition. Everything's included: bedding, towels, wifi.

The location is the main thing. It's about 200 yards from the beach. The beach is huge, white sand, and often completely empty. You look out over the machair, which is this flat, fertile grassland full of wildflowers in summer.

The wildlife is everywhere. You'll see birds of prey. Seals are common. If you're lucky, you might spot otters or dolphins from the shore.

Inside, it's set up for comfort. There's underfloor heating, a big shower, and a hot tub out the back. The owner is a fisherman, so he'll often drop off some fresh seafood for you. There's a dishwasher and a washing machine. Parking for two cars and an electric vehicle charger.

You need to be okay with being remote. The nearest shop is about six and a half miles away. A pub and restaurant are about seven miles. You'll want to plan your meals and bring essentials with you.

For getting around, the whole chain of islands is connected by causeways now. You can drive south to Benbecula and South Uist, or north to Berneray and get the ferry to Harris. The National Trust for Scotland looks after some sites nearby, like St Kilda viewpoint. The Visit Outer Hebrides site is useful for planning.

It’s a good base for walking, cycling, or just beach-combing. If the weather turns, it's a very comfortable place to be.
