Shepherd’s Retreat is a shepherd’s hut on a fruit farm in Bovinger, near Ongar in Essex. It’s for two people. There’s one bedroom and one bathroom.
It’s got a 4 Star rating, which is good. It’s detached and you have your own outside space. It’s glamping, so it’s one room, but done to a high standard. There’s a wood burning stove for heat and a bit of atmosphere. The kitchenette is small but has what you need for simple meals. Bedding and towels are included. There’s parking right by the hut and the Wi-Fi is decent.
The farm itself has a shop and a café when it’s in season. You can walk around the orchards. It’s quiet and rural.
For a proper walk, Epping Forest is about a 20 minute drive. It’s good for cycling too. Ongar is a few miles away for shops and pubs. The National Trust’s Hatfield Forest is about a 25 minute drive. Chelmsford is within half an hour if you need a bigger town or the station.
You can bring up to two dogs. The track up to the hut is a farm track, so it’s a bit bumpy but fine for normal cars.
