The Nicolson House

The Nicolson House is in Lemreway, on the south coast of Lewis. It's a traditional croft house that was renovated in 2021. It sleeps six, in three bedrooms, with one bathroom. It's a 4 Star place, so it's comfortable and well-equipped.

You get two front doors. The one on the far left is the best one to use, it goes straight into the kitchen. The kitchen is big, with a dining area and a utility corner. The main sitting room is on the ground floor too, with an open fire and an electric wood burner stove. There's also a double bedroom and the family bathroom on that floor.

Upstairs there are two twin bedrooms. All the bedrooms have armchairs and look out over the village and the sea. There's another separate staircase that leads up to a small sitting area above the kitchen. It's got a sofa bed and a desk by the window.

The stairs in the house are a mix. Some are fine, some are steep. There's also a separate, steep staircase to that top sitting room. Just be aware of that if you have mobility issues or very small children.

Outside there's an enclosed garden and a sauna. You can use it after a day out walking, or just because it's there.

Lemreway is a proper crofting village. It's quiet. When you come over the hill into the village the view is very good. You look out to sea, past Eilean Liubhaird island. On a clear day you can see the Shiant Islands, Skye, and the mainland.

You'll want a car. The main things to see on Lewis and Harris are all within a reasonable drive. The Callanish Stones, the blackhouse village at Gearrannan, the beaches at Uig, the Butt of Lewis lighthouse. Stornoway is about 25 miles away for shops and things. The famous Harris beaches like Luskentyre are about an hour's drive.

Facilities: it's detached, with parking. The garden is enclosed. There's WiFi, a TV, a washing machine, and bedding and towels are included. It's listed as wheelchair accessible at the entrance, but the stairs inside and the separate garden are something to consider. You can bring up to two pets.
