The Old Back Kitchen is at our farm, Bonfield Ghyll. It's up a rough track in Fangdale Beck, about seven miles from Helmsley. There's no mains electricity or water up here, we're off-grid. It's just the farmhouse and this cottage, so it's very quiet.
It sleeps two. One bedroom, but it's a mezzanine up in the rafters. You get to it by a steep ladder with handrails. The headroom is okay, but there are a couple of low beams to watch for. The bed is comfortable. There's one bathroom with a shower.
The place was built in 1707. The floors are old quarry tiles, so they slope a bit. There's a Victorian cooking range in the living room and a wood-burning stove for heat. The hot water and some radiators run off a wood-fired Rayburn and solar panels. We generate our own power from solar and a hydro screw in the stream. The lights are LEDs, and you can charge phones and laptops, but please don't bring your own kitchen appliances or hair dryers. We've left you a low-voltage one.
There's Wi-Fi, but it's patchy. TV signal comes and goes. We've put in books and games. There's a private deck and a wood-fired hot tub. It doesn't have jets, it's more of a soaking tub, but the view from it is good. The North York Moarks are a Dark Sky area, so the stars are clear on a good night.
You can walk straight out onto the moor. We're on the National Trust's Bransdale Estate. Helmsley has shops, pubs, and a castle. For a day out, York is about an hour's drive. Whitby is about 45 minutes. The North York Moors National Park site has walking and cycling routes.
Facilities: woodburner, parking, garden, bike storage, bedding and towels included. We take up to two dogs. It's a working sheep and beef farm, so dogs must be on leads around livestock.
