The Gate Lodge

The Gate Lodge is in Forse, up in the Scottish Highlands. It's a detached stone cottage from the 1800s. It's on a private estate, so it feels a bit separate. You're at the start of the lane that goes up to the main house.

It sleeps five. Three bedrooms, one shower room upstairs. It's got a 3 Star rating, so it's comfortable and clean. It's not a modern new-build. The doors are old, so mind your head on the way in.

The inside feels spacious for a cottage. High ceilings on the ground floor. The windows are deep and you can see the sea from most rooms. The stairs are the original ones, so they're a bit steeper and narrower than you get in a new house.

Outside, you've got your own garden. It's enclosed. The lane from the cottage goes through trees with a burn and some small waterfalls. You can walk up it and see deer. The owners are up at the main house. They run a cafe and a craft shop. You're welcome to walk in the estate grounds.

The beaches here are very good. Two miles to the nearest one. The village with a shop and a pub is about three miles away. Lybster has a harbour and is worth a look.

The area is full of old things. There are brochs and standing stones all over. If you like walking or wildlife, it's good. You might see puffins, seals, or even dolphins from the coast.

Facilities: there's a washing machine, a dishwasher, WiFi, and parking. Bedding and towels are included. We have a cot and a highchair. You can bring up to three dogs.
