Fairlaw Garden Cottage

Fairlaw Garden Cottage is in Reston, in the Scottish Borders. It's a detached place, used to be part of a dairy on a working farm. You're surrounded by fields. It's very quiet out here, and because there's not much light pollution, the night sky can be really clear.

The layout is upside-down. The bedrooms are on the ground floor. There are three: one with a kingsize bed and an en-suite shower room, and two twin rooms. There's also a main family bathroom with a bath. Upstairs is the living space. It's a big, open-plan room with beams and a kitchen at one end. The views from the windows look out towards the Cheviot Hills and the coast. There's a second, smaller living room off to the side as well, which is handy if people want to do different things.

Outside, there's a private, enclosed garden with a patio and a barbecue. There's a climbing frame and swing for kids. You're also welcome to use the big paddock next to the garden for running about or playing football.

The location is good for getting to a lot of places. The coast is close. Coldingham Bay and St Abb's Head are about a twenty minute drive for beaches and walking. The National Trust for Scotland looks after a lot of the coastline here. For walking inland, the Southern Upland Way and St Cuthbert's Way pass through the area. Golfers are well served: Eyemouth, Dunbar, and the courses in East Lothian are all within half an hour.

Berwick-upon-Tweed is about fifteen minutes south. Alnwick Castle and Gardens in Northumberland is maybe forty minutes. Edinburgh is just over an hour's drive north, up the A1.

Practically, it sleeps six, has a 4 Star rating, and we include bedding and towels. There's a washing machine, dishwasher, WiFi, and parking. It's wheelchair accessible at the entrance. There's a local pub a mile away, and a shop about a mile and a half. No pets, I'm afraid.
