Tigh Nam Muc

Tigh Nam Muc is in Old Pentland, near Roslin. It's part of an old stone farm steading. From the outside it looks traditional, but inside it's been done up modern and bright. An architect did the work.

It sleeps six. Four bedrooms, two bathrooms. One of the bedrooms has its own bathroom attached. It's got a 4 Star rating.

The main room is all open-plan: kitchen, dining table, and living area. There's an open fire and a wood burner. The stairs are a standard sort of cottage spiral, not the easiest if you have mobility trouble. Up another level there's a room they call the TV studio. It's got really long views out over the fields to the Pentland Hills and the Lammermuirs. Nice spot to sit.

Out the back there's a boot room for coats and muddy boots. The garden is private, with a barbecue and some furniture. It's enclosed, so fine for kids or a dog.

You're right on the edge of the Pentland Hills. You can walk straight out onto the paths from the cottage. Rosslyn Chapel is about a mile and a half away, just down the road. It's famously carved. The gorge there, Roslin Glen, is good for a walk.

You're about seven or eight miles from the middle of Edinburgh. It's a 15 minute drive, or you can get a bus. So you get the countryside but the city's right there.

Other things nearby: Hillend dry ski slope is a few minutes' drive. There's fishing at the Edinburgh reservoirs. A lot of golf courses around, including Swanston which has a beginners' course. The big indoor climbing centre at Ratho is about 20 minutes away. The coast at East Lothian, with beaches like North Berwick, is about half an hour's drive.

Facilities: washing machine, dishwasher, WiFi, parking. Bedding and towels are included. We can provide a cot, highchair, and stairgate. One well-behaved dog is welcome.

Useful links: Rosslyn Chapel (National Trust for Scotland), and for walking in the Pentlands: Pentland Hills Regional Park.
