Winlocke Cottage Wanlockhead

This is Fraser Terrace, also called Winlocke Cottage, in Wanlockhead. It's two old miners' cottages knocked into one. Sleeps eight, four bedrooms, two bathrooms. It's got a 4 Star rating. That means it's well-equipped and comfortable, not just basic.

The village is high up, feels quite remote, but you can actually get to the M74 in about 15 minutes. Glasgow and Edinburgh are both under an hour's drive.

Inside, there's a living room with a wood burner and a smart TV. The kitchen has what you need, plus a dishwasher and washing machine. Two of the bedrooms are on the ground floor, both with twin beds. Upstairs are two king-size rooms. The rear garden is enclosed, which is good for dogs or kids.

It's a quiet place. There's a pub in the village that does food. For walks, you're right on the Southern Upland Way. The scenery is big hills and empty roads. The Mennock Pass drive is stunning.

The Wanlockhead Museum of Lead Mining is here. You can go down a real mine. They also do gold panning lessons. If there's snow, people go sledging on the hills.

Within about half an hour you can get to the golf and horses in Moffat, or head south towards Dumfries. The town of Sanquhar is close for shops.
